Exploring Our Local Ngāhere

Our tamariki enjoyed special hikoi in our local community, giving them the opportunity to explore nature, enjoy fresh air, and make meaningful connections with the world around them.

Our younger tamariki visited the local Kauri bush walk, where they explored the boardwalk and admired the beautiful kauri trees. After walking together, they rested under the pergola and enjoyed some kai before continuing their adventure around the nearby field.

Our older tamariki explored the ngāhere behind the Kaiwaka Sports Association. With hi-vis vests on and buddies by their side, they walked safely through the bush, looking up at the tall trees and noticing the natural environment around them. This hikoi linked beautifully with their interest in insects, as the children searched for signs of bugs and especially hoped to find stick insects.

Although no stick insects were spotted, the children collected twigs and natural materials to bring back to the centre. These were later used in a creative project, where tamariki made their own rō, or stick insects, using sticks, beads, and other resources.

These bush walks supported curiosity, physical movement, creativity, and a deeper connection with our local environment. We look forward to continuing to explore our community with our tamariki.
